said here will not just remain between us此He will hear it all and one day He¨ll
call you to account。 Fine察 never mind why He¨s provided you with that
conscience in the first instance察I agree察you¨re justified in being afraid察and I¨ll
forget about this question and the mud´versus´fire debate。 But there¨s
something I¨ll never forget!yes indeed察 something I¨ll always be proud of此 I
never bowed down before man。
This察however察is precisely what the new European masters are doing察and
they¨re not satisfied with merely depicting and displaying every single detail
down to the eye color察 plexion察 curvy lips察 forehead wrinkles察 rings and
disgusting ear hair of gentlemen察 priests察 wealthy merchants and even
women!including the lovely shadows that fall between their breasts。 These
artists also dare to situate their subjects in the center of the page察as if man
were meant to be worshiped察 and display these portraits like idols before
which we should prostrate ourselves。 Is man important enough to warrant
being drawn in every detail察 including his shadow拭 If the houses on a street
were rendered according to man¨s false perception that they gradually
diminish in size as they recede into the distance察 wouldn¨t man then
effectively be usurping Allah¨s place at the center of the world拭 Well察 Allah察
315
almighty and omnipotent察would know better than I。 But surely it¨s absurd on
the face of it to credit me with the idea of these portraits察 I察 who having
refused to prostrate myself before man suffered untold pain and isolation察I察
who fell from God¨s grace to bee the subject of curses。 It would be more
reasonable to hold me responsible察as some mullahs and preachers do察for all
the children who play with themselves and everyone who farts。
I have one last ment on this subject察but my words aren¨t for men who
can¨t think beyond their eagerness to show off察 their carnal desires察 lust for
money or other absurd passions Only God察 in His infinite wisdom察 will
understand me此Was it not You who instilled man with pride by making the
angels bow before him拭Now they regard themselves as Your angels were made
to regard them察 men are worshiping themselves察 placing themselves at the
center of the world。 Even your most devoted servants want to be depicted in
the style of the Frankish masters。 I know it as well as I know my own name
that this narcissism will end in their forgetting You entirely。 And I¨m the one
who¨ll be blamed。
How might I convince you that I don¨t take all of this to heart拭Naturally察
by standing firmly on my own two feet despite centuries of merciless stonings察
curses察damnings and denouncements。 If only my angry and shallow enemies察
who never tire of condemning me察would remember that it was the Almighty
Himself who granted me life until Judgment Day察 while allotting them no
more than sixty or seventy years。 If I were to advise them that they could
extend this period by drinking coffee察I knoe察because it
was Satan speaking察would do the exact opposite and refuse coffee entirely察or
worse yet察stand on their heads and try pouring it into their asses。
Don¨t laugh。 It¨s not the content察but the form of thought that counts。 It¨s
not what a miniaturist paints察but his style。 Yet these things should be subtle。 I
was going to conclude with a love story察but it¨s gotten quite late。 The honey´
tongued master storyteller who¨s given me voice tonight promises to tell this
story of love when he hangs up the picture of a woman the day after
tomorrow察on Wednesday night。

I察SHEKURE
I dreamed that my father was telling me inprehensible things察and it was
so terrifying that I woke up。 Shevket and Orhan were clinging tightly to me on
either side察 and their warmth made me sweat。 Shevket had his hand on my
stomach。 Orhan was resting his sweaty head on my bosom。 Somehow察I was
able to get out of bed and leave the room without waking them。
I crossed the wide hallway and silently opened Black¨s door。 In the light cast
by my candle察I couldn¨t see him察only the edge of his white mattress which lay
like a shrouded body in the middle of the dark察 cold room。 The candlelight
seemed unable to reach the mattress。
When I brought my hand even closer察the reddish´orange light of the candle
struck Black¨s weary察unshaven face and naked shoulders。 I drew near to him。
Just as Orhan did察he slept curled up like a pill bug察and he wore the expression
of a sleeping maiden。
^This is my husband察院 I said to myself。 He seemed so distant察 so much a
stranger察that I was filled with sorrow。 If I¨d had a dagger with me察I would¨ve
murdered him!no察 I didn¨t actually want to do such a thing察 I was only
wondering察 the way children do察 how it¨d be if I killed him。 I didn¨t believe
he¨d lived for years through thoughts of me察neither in his innocent childlike
expression。
Prodding his shoulder with the edge of my bare foot察I woke him。 When he
saw me察 he was startled more than enchanted and excited察 if only for a
moment察just as I¨d hoped。 Before he¨d pletely e to his senses察I said此
^I dreamed I saw my father。 He confided something horrible to me此 You
were the one who killed him´ ̄
^Weren¨t we together when your father was murdered拭院
^I¨m aware of this察院I said。 ^But you knew that my father would be at home
all alone。 ̄
^I did not。 You were the one who sent the children out with Hayriye。 Only
Hayriye察and perhaps Esther察knew about it。 And as for whoever else might¨ve
known察you¨d have a better idea than I。 ̄
^There are times I feel an inner voice is about to tell me why everything has
gone so badly察 the secret of all of our misfortune。 I open my mouth so that
317
voice might speak察but as in a dream察I make no sound。 You¨re no longer the
good and naive Black of my childhood。 ̄
^That naive Black was driven away by you and your father。 ̄
^If you¨ve married me to take revenge on my father察you¨ve acplished
your goal。 Maybe this is why the children don¨t like you。 ̄
^I know察院 he said without sorrow。 ^Before going to bed you were
downstairs for a while。 They were chanting ̄Black察Black察my ass¨s crack察亜loud
enough so I could hear。 ̄
^You should¨ve given them a beating察院I said察at first half´wishing he¨d done
so。 Then I added in a panic察 If you raise a hand against them察I¨ll kill you。 ̄
^Get into bed察院he said。 ^Or you¨ll freeze to death。 ̄
^Maybe I¨ll never get into your bed。 Maybe we¨ve made a mistake by
getting married。 They say our ceremony has no legitimacy before the law。 Do
you know I heard Hasan¨s footsteps before I fell asleep拭 It¨s not surprising察
when I was living in the house of my late husband察I heard Hasan¨s footsteps
for years。 The children like him。 And he¨s merciless察 that one。 He has a red
sword察take care to guard yourself against it。 ̄
I saw something so weary and so stern in Black¨s eyes that I knew I
wouldn¨t be able to scare him。
^Of the two of us察you¨re the one with more hope and the one with more
sadness察院 I said。 ^I¨m just struggling not to be unhappy and to protect my
children察whereas you¨re stubbornly trying to prove yourself。 It¨s not because
you love me。 ̄
He went on at length about how much he loved me察how he always thought
only of me in desolate caravansaries察on barren mountains and during snowy
nights。 If he hadn¨t said these things察 I would¨ve awakened the children and
returned to my former husband¨s house。 Because I had the urge察 I said the
following此
^Sometimes it seems that my former husband might return at any time。 It¨s
not that I fear being caught in the middle of the nigh
